WHY LEARN HAITIAN CREOLE?

  • Learn to speak Haitian Creole if you plan to visit Haiti.
  • If you know French and English, Haitian Creole is a natural language to learn next.

Visiting Haiti

The Caribbean country of Haiti has a broken past, but the people have high spirits. Decades of poverty, dictatorship, violence, instability and natural disasters have left it the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Haiti’s rich culture, however, is eternally optimistic. It is extremely helpful for travelers to Haiti to have a local contact within the country. And, knowing at least the basics of the language, Haitian Creole, is a must.

About 12 million people speak Haitian Creole, sometimes simply called, Kreyòl or Creole. Most Haitian Creole-speakers live in Haiti where it is an official language, along with French.

Haitian Creole-speaking Countries

Beyond Haiti, Haitian Creole is spoken in the Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, France and in the United States.

Here are some of the basic Haitian Creole phrases that you will use often:

  • Koman ou ye? (How are you?)
  • Bonjou! (Good morning!)
  • Kij an yo rele sa an kreyol? (What do they call that in Creole?)
