Visiting Jersey, Channel Islands

Jèrriais is the form of the Norman language spoken in Jersey, in the Channel Islands off the coast of France. Because the language of education, commerce, and administration has mostly converted to English, Jèrriais has been declining at a steady rate. Mostly older people speak Jèrriais as their main language, so the numbers have been decreasing annually. Despite this, efforts are being made to keep the language alive.

Jersey’s coast is 48 miles long. Beautiful lengths of sandy shore fringe the south, east and west sides. While it’s rugged Cliffs, desirable for walking and cycling, frame the north and countless tranquil lanes lie in between.

Jèrriais-speaking Countries

Jèrriais is a language primarily spoken in the island of Jersey. A handful of people on the island of Stark are also fluent in Jèrriais.

Here are some of the basic Jèrriais words and phrases that you might use:

  • Beinv’nu! (Welcome!)
  • Ou ‘tait à paler. (She was speaking.)
  • Acater (To buy)
