WHY LEARN KHMER?

  • Khmer is the national language of Cambodia.
  • Khmer is widely spoken in Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Learn Khmer before traveling to Cambodia.

Visiting Cambodia

Khmer is spoken by about 22 million people worldwide and is the official language of Cambodia or Angkor. Just as Angkor is more than its wat, so too is Cambodia more than its temples. The capital of Phnom Penh is a hub of political intrigue, economic energy, and intellectual debate. All too often, the city of Siem Reap has been overlooked, but it is finally earning appreciation in its own right thanks to a gorgeous riverside location, a cultural revival, and a food scene to match up to some of the best in the region. And don’t forget the rest of the country: relax in the waterfront town of Kampot and trek the nearby Bokor National Park or simply choose a lazy beach near Sihanoukville.

Khmer-speaking Countries

Outside of Cambodia, Khmer is also spoken in large parts of Thailand and Vietnam.

Here are some of the basic Khmer phrases that you might use:

  • Niak sohk sabaay te? (How are you?)
  • Niak jeh phiasaa awngle te? (Do you speak English?)
  • Juay hav polih mao. (Call the police.)
