WHY LEARN LATIN?

  • Learning Latin can give you an advantage when studying literature and science.
  • Latin is the official language of the Vatican.
  • Learn Latin to help revive the language.

 Visiting the Vatican

Latin is the official language of the Vatican. Latin was once considered a dead language, but now its rustic charm is helping the language increase in popularity. Latin is spoken fluently by the Roman clergy and Latin scholars. Vatican, the world’s smallest sovereign city-state, sits on top of the Vatican Hill just west of the River Tiber. It is the capital of the Catholic world, a spiritual giant whose law is enforced by the world’s one billion Catholics. Aside from this, it’s one of Rome’s most visited areas and you’ll almost certainly have to line up to get into St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums.

Latin-speaking Countries

Latin is the official language of the Vatican, but it has a dwindling diaspora of a few clergyman and scholars.

Here are some of the basic Latin phrases that you might use:

  • Virtus et sapientia (Virtue and intelligence)
  • Rerum primordia (The origin of things)
  • Ipsa scientia potestas est. (Knowledge itself is power.)
