Visiting Luxembourg

Luxembourgish is a Moselle Franconian language spoken mainly in Luxembourg. About 390,000 people worldwide speak Luxembourgish. While its name can hardly fit on most maps, the tiny country of Luxembourg is pleasingly diverse. Thick highlands and valleys in the northern Ardennes intertwine with the Müllerthal’s old growth landscape to the east, where the town of Echternach acts as the base. The impossibly picturesque and ridiculously romantic Vianden is just a short trip north from Luxembourg City. The Moselle Valley weaves in the southeast with its steep vineyards and riverside hamlets. In between this entire layout are farmlands dotted with flawless houses and medieval hilltop castles.

Here are some of the basic Luxembourgish phrases that you will use often:

  • Prost! (Cheers!)
  • Ech hunn dech gar. (I love you.)
  • Gutt Besserung. (Get well soon.)
