Visiting Poland

Polish, the official language of Poland, is spoken by about 40 million people. While the country is looking to move into the future, its past cannot be ignored. Warsaw may be embracing New World cuisine and clubs that never close, but you’ll still encounter peasant women in its beautifully reconstructed Old Town. Drive across the country’s northern expanse and you’ll stumble upon a string of 14th-century Gothic castles. Catch a no-frills flight to Kraków and you’ll arrive in magnificent medieval centers. Or choose almost any major city and you’ll witness horrific extermination camps established by Nazi Germany, derelict Jewish cemeteries, and dark political prisons, dreadful memories from the last 70 years.

Polish-speaking Countries

Outside of Poland, Polish is also spoken in parts of Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine.

Here are some of the basic Polish phrases that you might use:

  • Uwielbiam polskà kuchniæ! (I love Polish food!)
  • Muszæ iúã do szpitala. (I need to go to a hospital.)
  • Zgubiùem passport. (I lost my passport.)
