Visiting Punjab

Punjabi is spoken by close to 100 million people, primarily in the Indian and Pakistani State of Punjab.

Punjab may share a (Sikh) prime minister with the rest of India, but feels distinct from the other states. Many parts of Punjabi culture, from butter chicken to bhangra music, strike visitors as quintessentially Indian because Punjab’s culture has been exported from far and wide. Luckily for Punjabi, foreign remittances have made it possible to become the most developed state. While this is a bonus, Punjabi still has social problems of their own. But amid the modernization, a strong sense of the past remains at sites such as Amritsar’s Golden Temple — Sikhism’s holiest shrine and one of India’s most beautiful buildings.

Punjabi-speaking Countries

There is a large diaspora of Punjabi speaking people in the USA and the UK.

Here are some of the basic Punjabi phrases that you might use:

  • Sat srī akāl! (Hello!)
  • Tuhāɖā nā̃ kī he? (What’s your name?)
  • Tuhānū̃ mil kē bāhut khushī hōī! (Pleased to meet you!)
