  • Rwandan is the official language of Rwanda.
  • Learn Rwandan (or Kinyarwanda) if you plan on visiting Rwanda as the majority of the Rwandans is monolingual.

Visiting Rwanda

The Rwandan language (also called Kinyarwanda) is spoken by about 12 million people in Rwanda, where it is the official language. Welcome to Le Pays des Milles Collines (Land of a Thousand Hills): Rwanda is a beautiful country of countless mountain ranges and eye-catching scenery, where the peaks of the Virunga volcanoes situated in far northwestern Rwanda are a spectacular site! In Parc National Des Volcans, the volcanoes form a natural frontier with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, and concealed in the bamboo and dark shadows of their forbidding slopes are some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas. These are the sightings that continue to pull visitors into Rwanda.

Rwandan-speaking Countries

Outside of Rwanda, the Rwandan (or Kinyarwanda) language is also spoken in parts of Uganda.

Here are some of the basic Rwandan words and phrases that you might use:

  • Witwa nde? (What's your name?)
  • Meza! (Good!)
  • Umunsi Mwiza! (Have a good day!)
