Visiting Somalia

Somali is spoken by about 16 million people worldwide and is the official language of Somalia and Somaliland. Somalia has been affected by a Civil War since 1991, along with poverty and prolonged droughts for quite some time. Also since this time, Somalia has converted itself into three separate countries in one: Somalia in the south, Somaliland in the northwest, and Puntland in the northeast corner. As if things couldn’t get any worse, the nation is also dealing with insufficient amounts of food, creating a public health epidemic.

Somali-speaking Countries

Outside of Somalia, Somali is also spoken in parts of Djibouti, Yemen, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Here are some of the basic Somali phrases that you might use:

  • Iska warran! (Hello!)
  • Waan ku faraxsanahay inaan kula kulmo. (I am glad to meet you.)
  • Maalin wanagsan. (Have a good day.)
