Visiting Morocco

Tamazight is a Berber sub-language predominantly spoken by certain Berber tribes in North Western Africa, specifically in Morocco.

Morocco, sometimes called “Land of God,” is a short hop from the regularities of Europe, but once there, travelers will find it is world in itself. Morocco is marred by the sea of sand in the east and the Sea of Mediterranean in the north. It’s as rich and diverse in culture as it is in its geography, from the snow-capped Atlas mountains along the west coast to the great desert in the east, and from the labyrinthine-like streets of Marrakesh to the grandeur of Casablanca and the beaches of Rabat. Morocco takes you on a journey back in time!

Knowing the Tamazight language definitely is required if you want to interact with the varied tribes in Moroccan Sahara.

Tamazight-speaking Countries

Tamazight-speaking people also reside in parts of Algeria and Mauritania.

Here are some of the basic Tamazight phrases that you will use often:

  • Ahlan! (Hello!)
  • Shukran. (Thank you.)
  • Yeh. (Yes.)
