Visiting Tibet

Tibetan is spoken by 8 million people across the globe. It is primarily spoken in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

This mysterious Buddhist kingdom is surrounded by its mountain fortress of the Himalaya. On a more mystical level, many have long whispered of the lost Shangri-La, an earthly paradise containing everlasting life. Tibet is rightly called the “Roof of the world,” co-destination to the tallest mountain on Earth, Mt. Everest (29, 035 feet).  If you are traveling anywhere in Tibet, a little knowledge of the language can go a long way in this supernatural land.

Tibetan-speaking Countries

Not surprisingly, the Tibetan language is spoken widely in the Kingdom of Bhutan and Nepal, and the mountainous regions India. India is home to the Government of Tibet in exile, which is headquartered in the serene city of Dharamsala.

Here are some of the basic Tibetan phrases that you will use often:

  • Ngai ming … yin. (My name is…)
  • Khye-rang jel-ney ga-po joong. (Nice to meet you.)
  • Red. (Yes.)
