Visiting Israel

Israel, established for the Jewish population following World War II, is considered part of the Holy Land, where the three major monotheistic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – all have historical ties. Israel is a fascinating place to visit for travelers and religious pilgrims. While Hebrew and Arabic are both official languages, most of the Israeli population speaks Hebrew.

One of the most popular Israel travel destinations is Jerusalem, home to the Dome of the Rock and the Temple Mount. Mea Shearim is one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, Israel, where life revolves around strict adherence to Jewish law, prayer and the study of Jewish texts. If visiting Mea Shearim, take note of the neighborhood regulations. Old Jaffa, believed to be one of the oldest port cities in the world, is a beautiful place to visit in Israel and is located just south of Tel Aviv. Another must-see in Israel is the Sea of Galilee, the birthplace of Christianity. A rich religious history, interesting culture and beautiful natural sites, make Israel a popular travel destination.

While in Israel, don’t forget to try all the different types of food! One of the most popular foods in Israel is falafel, usually served inside a pita bread. Other Israel foods that are fairly typical, include shawarma, a sliced turkey or lamb meat served inside a pita, and hummus, a cream of chickpeas, tahini, onion, lemon and olive oil. When dining in sit-in restaurants in Israel, leaving a tip is a must – usually 10-15 percent.

Hebrew-speaking Countries

In Israel, the Hebrew language is spoken as a first language by about 5 million people and by about 2.5 million people as a second language. It is an official language there, along with Arabic. About 2-3 million more people speak the Hebrew language across the world, in places such as the United States, Canada, Argentina, Australia, the United kingdom, Brazil, France, Germany, Panama, and the Palestinian West Bank and Gaza.

Here are some basic Hebrew phrases that you will use often:

  • Kama ze ole? (How much is this?)
  • Eifo ha’sheirutim? (Where is the bathroom?)
  • L’hitra’ot! (See you soon!)
