Kazakh is the official language of Kazakhstan and is spoken by about 8.5 million people. Kazakh is a Turkic language closely related to Kyrgyz. The Kazakh language has its speakers spread over a vast territory from the Tian Shan mountains to the Urals. A large diaspora of Kazakh speakers lives in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, about half a million Kazakh speakers reside in Russia and there is a sizeable populace in Mongolia and Uzbekistan.
