Visiting Alsace, France

Alsatian is spoken by about over 700,000 people predominantly in the Alsace region of France. Alsace, which is 118 miles long and no more than 31 miles wide, is made up of two rival administrative divisions: Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine), the area around the dynamic regional (and European) capital, Strasbourg; and Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine), which covers the region’s more southerly reaches, including the picturesque département capital, Colmar, and the industrial city of Mulhouse. Germany is just across the busy Rhine, whose left bank is Alsatian as far south as the Swiss city of Basel.

Besides in Alsace, France, Alsatian is also spoken in parts of Germany and Switzerland.
