Occitan is a Romance language spoken mainly in southern France, and also in Italy and Spain. There are about 1.5 million people who actually speak Occitan in their daily lives, while 5 or 6 million people are able to speak the language. The majority of Occitan speakers is elderly and lives in rural areas.

France has always captured the imagination of the romantics for its cuisine and magnificent countryside. Southern France is known for the famous French Riviera, and some of the world’s best wine and bubbly that makes its way to your Champagne flutes. The people in Southern France are nice and helpful, and would be impressed with a visitors ability to speak Occitan!

Occitan is also spoken in western provinces of Italy, the Principality of Monaco and the Eastern Provinces of Spain.
