Visiting Wales

Wales is rich in history and natural beauty. In fact, many of the people who visit Wales do so to appreciate the rugged beauty of its landscape. Mountains make up most of the northern and central areas of the country, but except for England to its east, the rest of Wales is bordered by sea — the Irish Sea, St. George’s Channel, the Celtic Sea and Bristol Channel. Wales is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain, so much of the population speaks English. However, the popularity of the Welsh language is on the rise with more than 21 percent of the population of Wales speaking Welsh as recent as 2004.

Knowing the Welsh language will be especially helpful if you plan on visiting the highest peak in England and Wales, Snowdon, in the western part of Wales where more than 62 percent of the population speaks it or while traveling to Aberystwyth, the largest city where Welsh is predominantly spoken. It’s also helpful to know Welsh when visiting the country’s medieval castles and royal sites, ordering food and reading about Welsh history.

Welsh-speaking Countries

Welsh is one of the two official languages of Wales with about 750,000 speakers of the language worldwide. Surprisingly, Welsh is a regional language spoken in the Chubut Province in Argentina. Other, less surprising, places with Welsh-speaking populations include England, the United States and Canada.

Here are some of the basic Welsh phrases that you will use often:

  • Bore da! (Good morning!)
  • Bye da. (Goodbye.)
  • Sut wyt ti? (How are you?)
