Yiddish was developed as a fusion of German dialects. Yiddish is a blend of these dialects with Hebrew, Aramaic and the Slavic languages, as well as a little of the Romance languages. Yiddish is written with the Hebrew alphabet. Yiddish is a German language of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. About 1.7 million people speak Yiddish throughout the world.

Yiddish is spoken across the globe, but mainly in the United States, Israel, Poland, Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Mexico, Moldova, Lithuania, Belgium, Germany, Austria and France. About 180,000 people in the U.S. speak Yiddish at home with more than 63 percent of them living in the New York area.
